Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C, Jn. 2: 1–11

Jn. 2: 1–11
Are you running short of your wine stock? In today’s gospel, John the evangelist takes us to the wedding feast at Cana. We are familiar with the first miracle that Jesus performed over there, changing water into wine. However, I think that real miracle is the presence of Jesus and Mary in that event.
This miracle invites us to reflect about the three dimensions of our Christian life. Primarily, the presence of Jesus in our lives. The bridegroom and bride invited Jesus to the most import moments of their life. Jesus was present there and his presence made the impossible possible. As our society encounters several broken families, it is good to reflect about our willingness to give a place for Jesus in our own houses. It is sad to see that some of us limit the presence of Jesus to the Sunday Holy Eucharist. In fact, we try to fulfill the obligation and not giving due importance for establishing a relationship with Jesus as a family and sharing his love with each other.
The second aspect is the presence of Mary. In that crucial situation, Mary took upon herself the burden of shame. So to say, she becomes the chief organizer of the event and approaches her son. Though Jesus says that his time has not yet come, even then Mary’s faith in her Son forced him to work the miracle for them. A well-known song goes thus: “Be with us Mary along the way, guide every step we take…” One can never fails when accompanied by Mary – a mother who followed Jesus without fail. On the cross, Jesus told his beloved disciple: “Son, here is your mother” and the disciple took her home. Let us take Mary home and never run short of happiness.
The third aspect is that of listening to Jesus and obeying his word: Pouring water into wine jars appears to be foolish yet they did it and there was fresh new wine. Let us follow Jesus holding the hand of Mary, listening and fulfilling his Word. When we follow all these three aspects, we will be never running short of wine…even in the midst of difficulties we can be at peace because Jesus and Mary, are with us, they will see to it…
